الاطناب هي كلمة غير ذات صلة أو لا داعي لها و تؤدي إلى تكرار ما قيل بالفعل. وفقًا لكروز (2000: 223)، "تحدث العلاقة المتضخمة للأطناب بين عنصرين عندما يبدو أحدهما زائدًا عن الحاجة، ولا تضيف شيئًا سوى المعلومات الدلالية التي قدمها العنصر الآخر بالفعل". في التفاعل اليومي وكذلك الكتابة، والاستعمال الاقتصادي للكلمات ليس دائمًا ما نطلبه.
هدفت هذه الدراسة إلى التعرف على أنواع الاطناب ووظائفها البلاغية في إطار الدراما. وأظهرت النتائج أن الإطالة التي هي نوع من الاطناب، هي الأكثر استعمالا .ومن ناحية أخرى فإن الضمائر التوكيدية المتعددة والضمائر الانعكاسية التوكيدية التي هي أنواع من الاطناب النحوي تقرأ (صفر).وأن الوظيفة البلاغية المهيمنة في الاطناب هي التوكيد والوضوح وهو الأقل منها.
