Abstract

This research aims to identify the impact of alternative strategies on the acquisition of literary texts and critical thinking skills among fifth-grade science students. The researcher selected a sample of fifth-grade science students from Al-Siddiqah Preparatory School for Girls, affiliated with the Directorate of Education in Diyala, Baquba District, to conduct the experiment. The sample consisted of 67 students, representing two groups: the experimental group (33 students) and the control group (34 students). The researcher ensured the equivalence of the two research groups in several variables (chronological age, parental educational attainment, intelligence test scores, and pre-test scores on critical thinking). The researcher controlled for extraneous variables that might affect this type of experimental design. The researcher selected the subject matter, which included eight topics from the Arabic language textbook prescribed for fifth-grade science students for the academic year 2025-2026. The researcher formulated behavioral objectives for the topics, resulting in a final total of 100 behavioral objectives. Model lesson plans were developed for each topic selected for the experiment. To measure the achievement and critical thinking skills of the students in the two research groups, the researcher prepared two tests: an achievement test and a critical thinking test. After applying the research instrument and statistically analyzing the results, the experimental group outperformed the literary texts achievement test and the critical thinking test. The researcher concluded that the alternatives strategy had a more positive impact on the achievement and critical thinking skills of fifth-grade science students compared to the traditional method. She recommended adopting the alternatives strategy in teaching the remaining curriculum content to fifth-grade science students and suggested conducting similar studies in other branches of Arabic language studies.
