Abstract

This research focuses on Clara Zetkin›s socialist feminist thought and its impact on the German and international labor movements between 1890 and 1933. Through a historical and analytical study, it traces her intellectual and political development and clarifies the European conditions that facilitated the emergence of her vision for the working woman. The research begins with the fundamental premise that Zetkin did not view the women›s issue as an independent legal or rights-based matter, but rather linked it to the class structure of capitalist society, considering the liberation of working women an integral part of the liberation of the working class as a whole. The research highlights Zetkin’s role as an influential intellectual and organizational figure who contributed to redefining the position of women within the German and European labor movement. She combined journalism, party work, feminist organizing, and socialist and internationalist struggle. The research also shows that her project went through three main phases: the phase of intellectual and political formation in Germany and in exile; the phase of building the international socialist feminist movement between the Stuttgart and Copenhagen conferences and her opposition to World War I; and the phase of her influence after the Russian Revolution, culminating in the confrontation with fascism and Nazism. The research concludes that her importance is not limited to the association of her name with International Women’s Day, but rather lies in formulating a socialist feminist trend that links the liberation of working women, the organization of the working class, and resistance to capitalism, war, and fascism, making her one of the prominent figures in the history of socialist thought and the modern labor feminist movement. It also reveals the depth of the relationship between women’s issues and the major economic and political transformations in Germany and contemporary Europe during that period.
