Abstract

It is human nature to question the underlying causes of any phenomenon, regardless of its type, and to seek to interpret it through judgments deemed logical by the researcher. Reasoning is a fundamental pillar of research methodology. Several phenomena have emerged in the Arabic language that one group of scholars considers a linguistic feature, while another views as a linguistic weakness. Among these phenomena is the concept of "contradictory verbal participles," traditionally referred to as "antonyms" (al-ʾaḍdād). These are words that convey two opposite meanings, such as "black and white" or "menstruation." Scholars have debated the existence of this phenomenon in the Arabic language, questioning whether it is an intrinsic feature of the language or an incidental occurrence. Opinions are divided between those who support its existence and those who deny it. The detractors have attributed its presence to various reasons that render it seemingly contradictory. This research examines a subset of such words, analyzing and explaining the reasons behind their contradiction. It also reviews the perspectives of linguists and lexicographers who have identified these words as contradictory. The study concludes with a set of findings derived from the analysis

الملخص

من طبيعة العقل البشريّ أن يتساءل عن الأسباب الكامنة وراء أي ظاهرةٍ مهما يكن نوعها، فيبحث عن تفسيرها بإخضاعها لأحكام يراها الباحث منطقية والتعليل ركن مهم من أركان منهج البحث، وقد ظهرت في اللغة عدة ظواهر يراها فريق من العلماء ميزة من ميزات اللغة ويراها فريق آخر من ضعف اللغة، ومن هذه الظواهر هي ظاهرة المشتركات اللفظية الضدية، والتي تدعى بالمصطلح القديم بالأضداد: وهي الالفاظ التي تحمل معنيين متضادين، مثل الجون للأسود والابيض، والقرء للطهر والحيض، فاختلف العلماء بوجودها في اللغة العربية، هل هي من أصل اللغة او هي حالة طارئة عليها: فما بين مؤيد وما بين منكر لها، وقد ردها منكرها إلى أسباب متعددة جعلتها تكون متضادة، فقد تناول هذا البحث جانبًا من تلك الالفاظ شرحًا وتحليلا مبينًا أسباب تضادها ومن مَنْ اللغويين والمعجميين قالوا بضديتها، وانهيت البحث بجملة من النتائج.
